Operation Starfish Gift Board

Fund Raising Project

OpStarfishGiftBoard

Global Seed Sowers has designed and is making available Gift Boards (pictured above) for use as fund raising tools.  The feeding program continues in Zimbabwe although donations are not currently meeting costs.  This would be a good time of the year for all of us to share some of our blessings with those, who through no fault of their own, find themselves starving and deprived of even the most basic medicines and medical care.  You may contact John or Jacque Fewkes at (503) 467-6374 or 720-1358 or by e-mail - john@kingswd.org or globalseedsowers@gmail.com to get a copy of the Gift Board to assist in this great endeavor.

Chris Dos Santos visits the U.S.

January 2010

The third week of January, Chris Dos Santos came to the U.S. to visit his brother Alvaro and family in Abilene, TX.  Chris has been facilitating the food deliveries to the feeding centers for the last year, following the collapse of the Zimbabwe dollar.

While in Abilene, Christ met with the Starfish board, saw the goods being prepared for the container loading, and gained a better understanding of how Operation Starfish works from the U.S.  It was also while in Abilene Christ determined to become a New Testament Christian and was baptized into Christ.

Chris then flew to Portland, Oregon for a brief visit and saw the goods being prepared for the container from there as well as the Global Seed Sowers work area.  He was introduced to the Kingswood and Oregon City churches that Sunday.  With John and Jacque Fewkes for “tour guides” and Tyler Ashby (Nolan’s son) who was going to visit the Abilene Christian University campus, Chris made his way back by car to Abilene via the Grand Canyon and his following flight back to Zimbabwe on February 22nd.

Chris indicated his renewed zeal for Operation Starfish and determination to become more closely involved in the Zimbabwe work of service.

Southeast Facilitators Visit Abilene

August  2009

The Operation Starfish Southeast Facilitators, Bill & Judy Wintermute, recently made a trip to Abilene, Texas to deliver items collected for onward shipment to Zimbabwe, Africa.  Starting out from Hartwell, Georgia they loaded donated items collected from congregations in Lavonia, Franklin Springs and Oconee, Georgia into their truck and trailer.  They stopped in Jemison, Alabama along the way to collect more donated items, and next in the Lake Fork, Texas area at a small town named Alba.  They spent the day there visiting with members of the local church of Christ, and had the opportunity to tell them about Operation Starfish Africa.  Proceeding towards their final destination loaded with approximately 5000 pounds of clothes, tools, medical supplies and other miscellaneous items, they arrived in Abilene, Texas where they met with Alvaro Dos Santos and his wife Debbie, Field Coordinators and Chief Fund Raisers for Operation Starfish.

Bill & Judy Visit Abilene

A total of three days was spent in Abilene meeting with members of the Hillcrest church of Christ, including Star Ferguson, who is responsible for accounting, to discuss how to handle receipts for donations both of goods and cash.

On the way home, Bill & Judy made a detour to spend a day or so with Sam Yaws, one of the individuals involved with the 1999 trip to Zimbabwe.  Sam is the caretaker for the Burnt Cabins church of Christ Youth Camp in Oklahoma.  The stay ended up lasting three days, so they were able to worship with the College Station church of Christ with Sam and his wife Joyce, taking the opportunity to spread the news about Operation Starfish by simply “Telling The Story” of the effort.  Many of the people there seemed very interested in the mission.  Returning home after a quick stop in Alabama, they were happily surprised to find a card from the Elders of the Alba church of Christ, thanking them for spreading the word by “Telling The Story”, and to let them know that their congregation had sent a $200 gift to Hillcrest to help with the cost of shipping the donated goods to Africa.

Quoting Bill; “We serve an Awesome God and he leads us all the time.  All we have to do is Speak up and Let people know how they can help.  We had a great 10 days, but I have to admit it does feel good sleeping in our own bed.   We are Looking forward to our next adventure with Operation Starfish Africa. “

Goods Ready for Another Container

May 18, 2009

The goods to fill another container from Portland are already in place.  God has opened hearts with compassion.  The departure of a third container (2nd from Portland) only waits for  funding for transportation.  On May 16, Medical Teams International informed John Fewkes of their willingness to provide as much as needed to finish filling the container with medical relief supplies.  With the some 30,000 yds. of fabric, chairs, podiums, sewing machines and more, this container will move forward with micro business sustainability as well as medical relief.
